Happy Talks #12: Zack & Sammie

Happy Halloween friends!  I hope everyone has some fun, exciting, and safe festivities planned.  Today for me is a day of relaxing; I celebrated the end of the spooky season over the last weekend and I had such a good time.  My boyfriend I went as Han Solo and Princess Leia… except I was Han Solo, and he was Princess Leia a la the gold bikini era.  It was great, but man did all that fun wipe me out!  It’s a weekday anyway, so I’m spending today hangin’ out, getting some work done, planning for next month, and saying farewell to my birthday month.

The holidays aren’t going to stop our Happy Talks though!  Today I’m talking with Sammie, half of the Youtube channel Zack and Sammie.  This cute couple makes videos on all sorts of topics: hauls, vlogs, Q&As, challenges and more.  Their “boyfriend does my makeup challenge” is my fave from them:

Let’s see what Sammie has to say about mental health!

1) What has your mental health journey been like for you so far? You can tell us as much or as little as you like.

It all started when I was back in grade 10. It’s never been an easy journey for me because I’ll go through… Let’s call them, ‘episodes’. I will get extremely depressed and then I’ll be okay. It’ll always go back and forth. It just comes and goes when it wants to and I’ve never understood it. Even when I have every reason to be the happiest, my mind is just like NOPE.

2) How do you keep yourself content day-to-day?

It varies. If I’m having a rough day, I will keep myself busy. Keeping busy helps my mind stay occupied so I don’t have to think about all the negatives. On the harder days, I’ll usually pick out a book and start reading. That calms my mind down and brings me down into a calmer state. One that I can think and focus on what’s going on and why I’m feeling the way that I am. It gives me a chance to breathe.

3) Looking back at times you’ve struggled, what would you tell your past self to help them out?

I would tell myself that it’s okay to panic. It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling because even though it’s SCARY, and believe me, it’s terrifying. It’s OKAY. It’ll pass.

4) What are the things that make you happy, how do you pursue them, and what would you tell others who are trying to pursue what makes them happy?

A lot of different things make me happy. I have a ton of life goals and I take things day by day. I don’t like to overwhelm myself because then I get into my head and I end up being less productive. Plan and organize what it is you’re trying to do and do one thing at a time. If you want to pursue something, it doesn’t just happen over night. Success happens over a long period of time so don’t rush and stress yourself out.

5) How do you take care of yourself when you’re feeling down?

This also varies. Some days I don’t know how to take care of myself. Some days I’m just an outright mess and other days I read, I write or I vent to my boyfriend. Or, in other cases, I cry. I know that sounds silly but when I cry it releases a lot of what I’m feeling and I’m able to calm myself down and take care of myself that way. Some days, I’m just so unsure of what I can do to help myself. That’s normal.

6) How has blogging contributed to your happiness?

I started a YouTube channel. I haven’t quite made it to a blogging website yet. Life has been too hectic. I want to though. If there’s one thing I love doing it’s reaching out to other people and giving them advice on what they can do to help themselves. I’m not so good at giving myself advice when I’m in need, but I’m extremely good at doing that for others.

7) What inspires you, both for blogging and in your personal life?

Helping people. I enjoy helping people through their worst struggles. If I can make a difference in one person’s day, I will be the happiest. Knowing I’m doing good in the world inspires me to do more of it and teach others to do the same. Also, my mom inspires me. She’s such a strong woman.

8) How have your friends and family supported your mental health journey? What helped and what did not?

My boyfriend has helped me a TON. He knows how to calm me down when I’m going through a frantic episode and how to calm me down when I can’t breathe from crying so hard. He’s truly a blessing in my life.

Things that don’t help is when people are negative about the way I’m feeling or think they know how I feel. What helps is being supportive and listening. Listening is especially important because all I want when I don’t know what else to do is I talk. That calms me down because it lets me get all my thoughts out and I am able to process them.

9) What are your goals for the future, both for yourself and your blog? How do you go about achieving those goals?

My goals for the future are to have my vlogging channel on YouTube to go somewhere. I want to make a difference in the world and I want to start my own blog. It gets me excited thinking about it. Again, I’m taking each day slowly and figuring out everything for my blog. I want it to be successful and I especially want it to make a difference in at least one person’s life and that’s what I’m currently striving for.

10) What makes you feel most alive?

Being productive. Getting stuff done is when I feel the most alive. I feel like I have a purpose.
